Orson Welles: Warrior of the Worlds has a new publisher and the entire graphic novel will be available to order on Kickstarter on March 25th!
Kickstarter Pre-Launch
Please go to the Kickstarter Pre-Launch Page to sign up & be notified when it goes live:
This new Kickstarter is to fund the printing of the book (which is fully completed).
About the Book
We are planning to offer the book initially in a softcover edition. If we hit a fairly aggressive stretch goal, we might be able to offer a deluxe hardcover as well.
It’s a whopper. 238 pages!
When Can You Get It?
You can order the book through Kickstarter when it launches on March 25th.
The files for the softcover edition have already been sent to the printer. We are getting a preview copy to check colors/paper quality. The books should arrive from the printer within about six weeks, which means we should be able to ship books in May/June.
About the Publisher
Orson Welles: Warrior of the Worlds will be published by 281 Studio.
What? You’ve never heard of 281 Studio?!
That’s because this will be 281 Studio’s first book.
Who? Just who is 281 Studio? Well, that’d be yours truly. I am launching a publishing line for not only Welles, but some of my other projects.
The name “281 Studio” has two sources of inspiration.
Studio # 281 is the location where Orson Welles began shooting Citizen Kane. He told the executives at RKO Pictures that he was just doing some tests, but he was already shooting footage to be used in the film.
(281) is also one of the primary area codes for Houston, Texas. I wasn’t born here, but it’s my home. And it’s also where the publishing operation is located. Even if I move someday, I’ll always feel like it’s a home, and it’s certainly the permanent home for my sports loyalties (which is all that really counts, right?).
Why?
I’ve had about ten years of experience making and publishing comics. I’ve worked with some small indie publishers, and even some larger publishers for some projects that didn’t make it to the finish line. Here’s some of what I’ve learned:
The marketplace is shifting toward more direct creator/reader relationships.
Some of the value-adds that traditional indie publishers have historically provided aren’t relevant anymore, and some of the previous barriers for smaller/solo organizations have been removed or diminished.
Nobody’s gonna fight harder for a book than its creators. Whether it’s production matters, salesmanship, or tiny details, I’m going to inherently put more devotion into every step of the process than some third party, no matter how skilled and experienced they may be.
Evidently, I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to comics. If there’s a potential problem with a book, I’d rather it be my choice that I can either address or accept, rather than be at the mercy of a third party’s processes and priorities.
What about a multimedia adaptation?
Yes, there’s activity for a multimedia adaptation in the works. In fact, there have been several cool developments recently on that front. Just this week I turned in a first draft of [RECACTED BY LEGAL TEAM]. Sorry to be vague but there’s nothing that can be discussed publicly at this time; but, be assured, exciting things are happening!
Thank you to everyone who has been following this project and for your infinite patience; it’s been a long journey, but we’re finally getting close to the point where you’ll be able to hold the physical book in your hands and go on a space adventure with Orson Welles.
Congrats, Milton! Way to take control of the narrative.
That’s the best news ever! I’m so happy for you!!!
