Today I’m thrilled to announce and preview my next comic project →
Splinter City
Here’s a preview of a concept piece for the setting of the story - in many ways, the city itself is the main character:
The pitch and tagline
Russian gangsters on a floating city in space. A cyberpunk code-merge of "The Wire" + Philip K Dick.
What happens when millions of vacuum-sealed citizens take a blowtorch to the social contract?
The creative team
Splinter City is written by me - with art by Jacob Dudek. Jacob studied art at SCAD. I met him at HeroesCon this year and was instantly drawn to his style. You can check out other examples of his work on Instagram - and he’s also got a story in the Fairytales from Mars anthology now on KickStarter.
EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW - NEW ART !
You might have seen some of the preview samples of art we posted on social media in recent days, but here’s an exclusive new preview of concept art of one of the main characters:
ICYMI
And in case you missed it, here’s a glimpse at our central character, Alexi Maksimov:
BACKGROUND: THIS ONE KICKED MY BUTT SEVERAL TIMES
Splinter City was the first project I tried to write when I committed myself to writing comics a little over a decade ago. I tried, and failed. It was a classic example of all the wrong ways to do comics: Too much worldbuilding. Too many words per panel. Too many panels per page. Ambiguous where it should’ve been clear. Obvious where it should’ve been subtle. Sprawling and chaotic where focus and structure were needed.
I tried it again several times over the years. Each time, I wasn’t up to the task. But no matter how many projects I cycled through in my creative journies, this one never went away. It was always simmering in the background. This year, I finally cracked the code and figured out how to do it right - and I think you’ll enjoy the results.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Over the next several weeks, Jacob and I will be sharing small previews of progress as we put together the book - and we will be launching it on Kickstarter.
LET'S GOOOOOOO
I Love this so much!!!! It looks so good!!
