The Best Movies According to Some Guy Named Milton
Announcing a newsletter series for 2025
Starting in 2025, I am going to start a newsletter series of essays about my favorite movies.
This series is inspired by Roger Ebert’s The Great Movies series, but it will be different in several ways. This is not my attempt at proclaiming a Cinematic Canon of the “objectively” greatest films. This is an autobiographical curation. There will be some popcorn flicks, genre flicks, comedies, critical darlings, and cable trash in the series. I will even bend the very definition of what counts as a “movie.” To preempt questions about why some titles make the cut and some don’t:
This is my Best Movies list. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
The series will also feature artwork by comic book artist Christopher Doray. Follow him on Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/chrisdoray_art/
I hope to include two essays per week. By the end of the year, I should have a list of 100+ films. When it’s all done, we hope to compile it into a book.
The movies will be presented in no particular order, and without any ranking or scoring system. I will also cheat by occasionally grouping trilogies, duologies, or other formal series units into one entry. I will also group a few films around some informal themes or other schema.
The series is also weighted a bit towards older films. It’s the inverse of recency bias: The films that have stayed with me for a long time have an advantage over the Johnnies Come Lately. But there’s contemporary stuff in there as well.
Starting next week!
